The initial focus for Roslyne Ecological was running the Hi-Tech Wild-Trek Trailer which visited schools and public events throughout the South of England for nearly 20 years with occasional visits as far afield as the Lake District and East Anglia. The trailer was retired in 2015 and more time has been spent on river health; sampling invertebrates and training citizen science volunteers.

Roslyne Ecological has a proven track record in delivering quality surveys of freshwater invertebrates and has worked closely with the Riverfly Partnership and with the SmartRivers citizen science initiative run by Wildfish. It has also been providing education in the field for schools and adults. Educational resources have been developed as a result of this experience.

Dr. Richard Osmond, an ecologist and educator works in collaboration with Matt Owen-Farmer who has a background in training and is the environmental officer for a local fishing club. Together they have been carrying out sampling of freshwater invertebrates and running citizen science training courses for nearly 20 years.

Roslyne Ecological is based near Winchester in Hampshire. Most of our work is carried out in the the southern counties of England but we have also surveyed rivers in Wales and East Anglia and trained volunteers there for the SmartRivers programme.
Using standard methodology to collect samples of invertebrates from freshwater habitats. We currently carry out annual sampling for the Test & Itchen Association along both of those premier chalk streams. We also collect benchmark samples for SmartRivers.
Standard macroinvertebrate samples are sorted and identified to Taxanomic Level 5. Results can be analysed to calculate metrics that indicate the stress factors affecting the stream habitat. A written report describes the outcome in text and graphics.
We are happy to advise on the management of freshwater habitats and carry out surveys to establish the current status of a site before any modifications are made. We can also give your garden pond a quick check to let you know if it is pulling its weight in providing a good habitat for wildlife.
One of the biggest citizen science river monitoring programmes is the Riverfly Monitoring Initiative (RMI) run by the Riverfly Partnership. We have been training volunteers for this programme from the outset and interest in river health is now so high that we train approximately 100 volunteers every year to take monthly samples of the riverflies in their local river.
SmartRivers, which is run by the WIldfish charity, is training volunteers to collect and analyse invertebrate samples from their local rivers. The data is comparable with that collected by the EA and is quality assured by professionals. We helped to develop the programme 10 years ago and are responsible for the initial benchmarking and training across the South of England and Wales.
With more than 30 years of experience in providing opportunities and resources for teaching ecological topics, we are able to offer advice and materials based on that experience. We can also assist with the writing of education packs and creating bespoke resources. Some of products are available for purchase through this site, but you can get in touch if you have any other enquiries.
